If font is not a four letter word, then what is it!!! Turns out that font is a design element that can have a big impact on the overall look and feel of your webpages or blog postings.
When I launched the Women’s iBusiness Journal, I happily bought a prepackaged WordPress template to use for my website. I felt empowered and in charge of the destiny of my web presence as I loaded pictures, created pages and posts…all by myself with minimal need for technical support.
That was until I noticed the font. I did not like the style of the font that came “predefined” with the template. Every time I published a page, I felt like the font style was too small, techy looking and that there was no white space! The result was a less than satisfying “reading” experience, which is really important for an online publication.
So began my search for a better font. Little did I know what I was getting myself in to. There are hundreds of font styles to choose from. Some work well for online use and others are better for the world of print. Add to that the whole issue of font weight, white space between sentences and paragraphs…well you start to understand why I started thinking of font as a four letter word.
Font Tester
In my travels I found a terrific website designed to help figure this stuff out. The Font Tester site is free and lets you compare three different formats at a time. It also creates the code for the CSS file that is used to recreate the style in your webpages. (Depending on your technical knowledge, you may need some help with this…I did!)
The help page is terrific. It provides instructions on how to use the tool, and you learn alot along the way about other design elements. A list of “web-safe fonts” is also provided.
In the wide world of the web, a font has amazing power! It creates an immediate impact on your site visitors, effects the reading “experience” of your visitors and clients, and with social bookmarking, your webpage and font show up all over the place as your representative.
Never again will I think of font as a four letter word!
